“I want to talk to you about Jack’s birthday,” Kellie told Justin one spring evening when they were alone at home.

“Sure.” Justin stood up from the couch and put his ledger away on the shelf before turning back to her. “What do you have in mind?”

“Well, I don’t know if it’s too much, but they’re putting on Hamlet at the theater this month, and we could take him the night before his birthday. I think he would love it.” Kellie turned the sock she was darning over in her hands, and satisfied with how it looked, tied off the end of her string.

Justin thought for a moment, and nodded. “He would love that. Will we still have cake or do anything else?”

“I thought maybe we could make him something nice for dinner and have cake on his actual birthday, but it can just be us. The show is a little expensive, so it’s a big enough gift on its own.”

“I think it’s a good idea.” Justin sat back down with his Bible in hand. “Why don’t you take Jack to the show yourself, and spare the cost of my ticket. Then you can get him a nice piece of meat or something for dinner the next day.”

Kellie frowned at him. “Are you sure? It would be nice to all go together.”

“I’m sure. Shakespeare is lost on me anyway,” Justin said, opening his Bible and ending the conversation.

The night of the show, Kellie wore her new evening dress, Jack dressed up sharply in his nicest church clothes, and they made a stunning pair at the theater. It was Jack’s first time to ever go to one, and Kellie hadn’t been in years, so they both hung on every word, enchanted by the production.

Jack gushed about it in the rented buggy the whole way home, and Kellie drank in the way his face lit up, the happiest he had been since Jed left. As they walked down the street from the livery, she gently hung onto Jack’s offered elbow.

“Thank you for taking me tonight. It was special to do it with you,” Jack said, turning his bright blue eyes down on her.

“I’m glad you liked it. Happy seventeenth birthday, little brother. We’ll have cake tomorrow.”

“Thanks,” he repeated, but the next night, things were a different story.

“I’d like to have cake a little later,” he told Kellie as they neared the end of dinner. “I could use a drink right now, but I’ll be back after a while.”

“Oh. Okay, we’ll be here,” Kellie said, visibly disappointed. Justin glared at him as he pulled his boots on and left.

“I can’t believe him,” Justin grumbled, standing up from the table. “He has so much nerve, leaving on his birthday like that.”

Kellie gave a little sigh. “It will be fine, Justin, we can just have cake when he gets back.”

But Jack didn’t come back, even though Kellie fell asleep on the couch waiting for him. He hadn’t returned in the middle of the night
